Reassure and comfort (R&C)

What it means, when you'll hear it, and what it actually changes in practice.

Reassure and comfort (R&C) is a gentle sleep-coaching approach in which a caregiver reassures a child that it is safe to fall asleep, both at bedtime and during night waking.

Reassure and comfort (R&C) is a gradual, responsive sleep-coaching technique. The caregiver stays present and offers reassurance — through a calm voice and gentle touch — to help a child feel safe as they fall asleep, both at bedtime and when they wake in the night.

How does it fit a gentle approach?

R&C is designed to support a child while they learn to settle, rather than leaving them to cry alone. The caregiver responds to the child but allows them the space to do the falling-asleep themselves, so the child gradually builds the skill with reassurance available throughout.

How does it change over time?

The level of support is reduced in small, manageable steps as the child grows more confident — for example moving from hands-on soothing to a reassuring voice, and then to brief check-ins. Progressing in small steps is intended to keep the change feeling secure for the child.
