Improving your baby’s wellbeing: A holistic approach to health and happiness

This World Health Day, I wrote this blog to talk about a holistic approach to baby and child health—one that nurtures their whole being, from their tiny toes to their growing minds.
What is holistic health for babies and young children?
Holistic health focuses on the whole child—not just treating symptoms, but supporting their physical, emotional, and developmental wellbeing. It’s about prevention, balance, and gentle support, using natural and alternative methods alongside traditional medical care.
From gentle sleep coaching and nurturing touch to gut health and emotional bonding, I'm going to look at simple ways you can support your baby’s holistic development.
Gentle sleep foundations- Sleep is the foundation of good health—for both babies and parents. A holistic approach to sleep focuses on understanding your baby’s natural rhythms rather than forcing a strict routine. It encourages using gentle sleep coaching to develop independent sleep skills and create a calm and safe sleep environment with natural sleep cues for your baby. Gentle sleep coaching supports sleep through baby massage, age- appropriate essential oils, and relaxation techniques
One way to incorporate holistic sleep coaching into your daily routine is to have a warm bath followed by a gentle baby massage. This can help relax your baby or child before bedtime, encouraging a deeper and more restful and restorative sleep.
Breastfeeding & infant nutrition: Supporting gut health naturally.
Breastfeeding is nature’s perfect first food, but whether you choose to breastfeed or bottle-feed, a healthy gut plays a key role in your baby’s immune system and digestion. We have all become much more focused on gut health recently, and it's essential for both you and your child's overall health. A baby’s gut microbiome is established in the first 1,000 days of life—this means the choices you make early on can potentially shape their long-term health. From milk to weaning, here are some ways to support gut health holistically and realistically:
Breastfeeding (if possible) to provide natural antibodies and good bacteria.
Introducing solids mindfully—starting with gut-friendly foods like avocado, sweet potato & bone broth, as well as providing your little one with developmentally appropriate textures to help get them used to different ways of eating.
Avoiding processed baby foods and opting for organic, whole ingredients where you can and where your budget allows.
Consider probiotics (under guidance) to support digestive health.
Baby massage benefits for growth and emotional development.
One of the simplest yet most powerful ways to support your baby’s emotional wellbeing is baby massage. Regular baby massage can help with colic and digestion, if you've ever used baby massage for colic, then you know that you see an almost instant result! It can improve bonding and attachment to each other, as well as promote better sleep and relaxation. It can also support your baby's neurological and sensory development.
Gentle parenting: Emotional wellbeing & secure attachment.
Holistic health isn’t just about the body—it’s about the mind and emotions too. Babies and young children need connection, love, and security to thrive. Ways to support emotional wellbeing include responding to your child with empathy (no matter their age)—your baby’s cries are their way of communicating, not manipulating. Babies and young children do not have the ability to manipulate us, they simply have wants and needs with no other way to vocalise them than crying. If you have a young baby, you can encourage bonding through skin-to-skin contact, even if you are not breastfeeding. Skin to skin is a great way to spend time together and encourage emotional connection. You can use play therapy to help toddlers express emotions. Children learn through play and books, so take some time to enter their world and see things as they do.
First aid for parents: Being prepared for holistic wellbeing.
While we focus on prevention, knowing baby and child first aid is essential for every parent. Being prepared for common childhood emergencies can give you confidence and peace of mind. Prevention is often better than cure, but sadly no matter how careful we are, childhood accidents are very common. Through a simple first aid workshop, you can learn essential skills such as how to respond to choking/allergic reactions right through to baby and child CPR techniques. As well as emergency situation responses, you will also learn how to manage fevers and common illnesses naturally. Being equipped with the right knowledge means you can respond calmly and effectively, meaning that your child gets the best possible care.
A holistic approach to baby and child health isn’t about doing everything perfectly—it’s about making small, mindful choices that support your child’s overall wellbeing.
